Over and Done
Gerald Brennan—composer, lyricist, pianist, singer
This is a country waltz, and it comes in three flavors, with three necessarily different lyric sets — solo male, solo female, and duet.
Ain’t much to know, pardner, just your straight-ahead my-baby-done-left-me song. In the duet version, natch, the lady sings the parts the fella is singing for her in this version.
She tried to make the affair work with this guy, but she never felt more married than she was with this new lover.
The guy is claiming that he doesn’t understand what went wrong. Sure, pal. But when we’re in a situation like this, everybody sees the obvious but us.
She told me, it’s all over.
Over and done.
She said that livin’ a lie made her
feel only more like his bride.
I told her, think it over, and begged her to stay.
I really wanted to let her know
my heart was hers alone,
that I was in love with the girl of my dreams.
Or that’s how it seemed,
and my heart was broken when she said to me,
The tighter you hold me, the harder you try,
the more I miss the one who left me behind,
the more I beg the graces of heaven above,
to send back the one who I love so much.
I still need to remember,
that once she was mine.
And I remember the days and nights
and tender mornin’s
wakin’ in love with the girl of my dreams.
Or that’s how it seemed
and my heart was broken when she said to me,
The tighter you hold me, the harder you try,
the more I miss the one who left me behind,
the more I beg the graces of heaven above,
to send back the one who I love so much.
She told me that she loved me.
The tighter I hold her, the harder I cry,
She’ll never be my woman and I’ll never know why.
I gave her all the love that a woman could want,
I still wonder, what ever went wrong?
She told me, it’s all over.
Over and done.
